Fields in Trust receives funding for UK-wide outdoor gyms
We're pleased to announce the recipient of our 2010 Gift Aid funding is Fields in Trust, a charity which works to protect the quality of recreational space across the UK.
Fields in Trust will use £300,000 to install 10 WREN 'FIT Zones' across the country. These outdoor gyms, open for public use and suitable for all ages, will be created on the newly protected Queen Elizabeth II Fields. The Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge, led by its Patron Prince William, aims to protect 2012 outdoor recreational spaces by the year 2012 - creating a permanent legacy that will benefit communities now and for generations to come.
The 10 towns and cities set to receive a WREN 'FIT Zone' scheme are Nottingham, Chester, Workington, Penistone, Warrington, Nuneaton, Llandeilo, Rhyl, Edinburgh and Craigneuk.
"The outdoor gyms will provide fantastic opportunities for people to get fit and healthy for free in their local park or field using exercise bikes, weights machines, treadmills and skiers. And we're delighted to support the plans" says Peter Cox, WREN's managing director.
For 11 years, WREN has used interest earnings from Landfill Communities Funding money to award grants via Gift Aid to projects which benefit local communities.
"This is the first time we've chosen to grant the entire Gift Aid fund to one organisation, as the impact of the project will be felt by so many people" Peter adds.
