Work starts on the Llanrhos Old School Restoration and Improvement

Old School set to return to being the hub for the community

The historic Llanrhos Old School was built in 1822 and last functioned as a school in 1898. It has since then been a meeting place but over the past years the fabric of the building has deteriorated and without major capital investment would have fallen into disrepair and be lost to the community. It is a grade 2 listed building.

Work is now well underway on the Llanrhos Old School Restoration and Improvement Project. The objective is to restore and modernise the building so that it becomes a meeting place for the communities of Deganwy, Llanrhos and part of Craig y Don.

Dave Rowley Chairman of the committee said “We have now reached halfway stage in the project”. He added “The contract is going extremely well and we are very pleased with the restoration work carried out to date, we are delighted to be able to use local skilled people and materials in the restoration project”.

The original school bell had also been restored and re-installed. The bell sits on a solid hardwood block and Mr Young of Old Smithy Gate Co, who has carried the restoration work, was able to locate a piece of an old groyne from Llandudno North Shore to use to refurbish the historic bell .

Demolition work has been completed, the under floor network of pipes has been installed, work to the new kitchen and toilets are underway and a second floor above the meeting room..

WREN contributed the top main grant scheme award of £50,000 towards the project.
