Wheelock Way
The aim of the project is to develop sections of the disused North Staffs railway as a recreation route and for nature conservation, for use by the local community and as an educational facility for local schools. The intention is to enhance and rejuvenate the natural environment so it can be used by everyone and the 2km route now provides safe recreational facility for walkers, cyclists and riders and for those with disabilities.
WREN provided £50,000 of funding and co-funded the project with the County Council to create a pathway covering two kilometres of the former railway route, improve entrances and access and build new drainage systems.
The County Council’s Countryside Management Service, which owns and runs the trail worked closely with The Wheelock Rail Trail Association, a community group formed to assist with the development and management of the facility to ensure the local community were consulted and involved from the start.
