Work starts on St Nicholas Tower roof repairs in Whitehaven
Located in the centre of Whitehaven, St Nicholas Tower is a very well known landmark and valuable community resource. The Church was destroyed by fire in 1971 leaving only the tower remaining. The tower has now been developed into a popular community resource, comprising of meeting facilities, a community café, small museum and a chapel. The grounds have been developed into a community garden with green flag status.
WREN was approached in 2007 to assist with urgent repairs to the tower roof to prevent further water damage to the building and a maximum grant of £50,000 was awarded in October 2007.
Following additional fundraising works have now commenced on the £80,000 project and it is hoped that the roof repairs will be completed before the onset of winter.
