Heage Windmill
An application was made to WREN to contribute towards the restoration of Heage windmill, near Belper in Derbyshire. The aim was to restore it to full working order and open it to the public as a local historical visitor attraction.
WREN contributed to the restoration of the Mill Tower and machinery, funded a compact visitor centre within the old drying kiln, complete with toilets and disabled access together with contributions towards improved access to the mill, and the installation of the mains services (water and electricity) which are vital to this type of project being successful in attracting visitors.
The project was helped by the good liaison maintained by WREN staff with the applicants, and by the ability of WREN to assist with all those parts of the project which are absolutely essential to the success of the whole.
The success of the project has been widely acclaimed, and it won First Prize in the Derbyshire Greenwatch awards in 2002.
