Purfleet Barrel Store

The Barrel Store or Proofing House is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade II listed building on the edge of Purfleet Conservation Area. It is located close to the River Thames and was once part of a larger complex of buildings comprising the former Purfleet Garrison – an important military establishment in this area.

The Barrel Store was previously used as the ‘Purfleet Play Centre’ and occasionally by Purfleet Heritage but in order to extend the community use of the building a complete refurbishment was needed to improve access, repair the historic fabric, reversing some of the inappropriate 1960’s alterations and provide additional toilet and disabled facilities via a modest extension.

Working in partnership with Thurrock Council and English Heritage, WREN provided a grant of £58,000 for these essential works. The Barrel Store reopened its doors to the public in April 2004.
