William Wallace is regarded by many as an heroic and inspirational figure because of his valiant adherence to his goals and principles. He suffered terribly for his country and has become a powerful symbol, more than any other Scottish figure, of patriotism and of the struggle for Scottish independence.
Although historians continue to debate the point, in all probability Wallace was born in Elderslie, Renfrewshire in 1274. A memorial to Wallace exists at Elderslie, which consists of the ruins of his childhood home, a magnificent column commemorating his life and the famous Wallace Yew Tree. It is believed that the existing tree grew from seedlings of the original planted by Wallace’s hands themselves.
Supported also by the Clan Wallace Society, Wren awarded £3194 towards the preservation of this world famous memorial.
