Scartho Village Community Centre Roof
WREN awarded: £50,000 towards a new roof at Scartho Village Community Centre, Scartho, Nr Grimsby in North East Lincolnshire.
In April 2004 the local authority closed down Scartho Youth Centre, which was run by the Youth Service. The building also used by the community in general was solely missed. A committee of people struggled to re-open the building, and made some improvements, under license from North East Lincolnshire Council, calling it "Scartho Village Community Centre". The building, which was decommissioned in every way was re-opened on 10th September 2004 and now has a sustainable income. Its users include Adult Education, The Grimsby Institute, the Red Cross and The Apostolic Church.
Various local tradesmen have provided their services free of charge to make this much possible, but there is still a long list of improvements to be undertaken.
A new roof is the most expensive and one of the most needed improvements for the building. Before the Committee had to patch up the roof as and when leaks appear. These were spoiling programmed events and discouraged existing users and also results increased maintenance bills. A new roof was identified to remedy the situation, plus help save on heating bills as the roof would include 80mm of insulation built into the system and a touch fibre glass covering, which would offer some protection against vandals.
In early 2007 WREN funding, along with local contributions from Scartho Community Centre has been used to put a new roof onto the Centre and reduce the identified problems that the users have suffered from. The works are now complete and the Centre is well used by both old and new user groups from the local and surrounding areas.
