Scunthorpe - Frodingham Nature Reserve

Scunthorpe - Frodingham Nature Reserve

WREN awarded: £10,000 towards the cost of replacing the boardwalk, pond dipping platforms and fencing, gates and seating area costs at Frodingham Nature Reserve in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire

Frodingham Nature Reserve was the first local nature reserve to be declared in North Lincolnshire. The site is an urban wildlife haven set between housing and the Scunthorpe hospital car park.

The reserve is managed as a wet wildflower meadow with an existing wooden boardwalk providing access across the left hand side of this boggy site. The boardwalk was installed in the 1990's and is frequently repaired.

The pond was dredged and opened up in autumn 2005. At the same time, works were undertaken to remove overshadowing trees and level the sides of the pond. These works have much improved the pond habitat allowing sunlight in and removing the problem of leaf litter

Improvements were needed at the site for the benefit of the local community and the wildlife. These improvements include new boardwalk, the installation of pond dipping platforms for educational visits and community use would much improve this facility and the replacement of the fencing and gate along with a seating area.

All identified works are now completed and the Nature Reserve can now be enjoyed, not only be the immediate local community, but by the surrounding communities.

In order to continue managing the site as a wet meadow, volunteer work parties undertake annual scrub clearance in the autumn and strim one third of the site on a 3 year rota.
