Silverhill Pit Millennium Point

Opening Event

In Nottinghamshire, the collieries closures suddenly left large tracts of derelict land across the county and in order to improve the local environments and aid the attraction of inward investment into the area, Nottinghamshire County Council undertook a partnership project with both the Coal Authority and Forestry Enterprise to reclaim and restore several of the colliery sites after use.
One of the restored colliery spoil tips at Silverhill, now forming part of the Silverhill Pit Wood, is the highest point in Nottinghamshire. Works have been carried out to provide access to this point and a viewing platform on the summit.
To commemorate the mining heritage of the area, Wren contributed £22,500 towards the commissioning of an artist to design and build a memorial to stand on the summit. The sculpture is a tribute to the mining community.
