Tairgwaith Environmental Improvements

Groundwork Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot were approached as an environmental organisation by the Circle of Youth, a group of young people who meet weekly to develop a village website and newsletter, to help them with a project to improve what is currently some waste ground near to their meeting venue. Groundwork met with the young people to look at the site and discuss their ideas on what they would like to see in the area.

The ideas that came about included;
Land clearance, seating and picnic benches overlooking the local Trotting Club track, seed/flower beds to allow the planting of decorative shrubs, flowers, play/run about area for children aged 0-7 living in the area, willow weaving features, bird and bat boxes, tree planting and grassed areas

These ideas were compiled and plans with associated costing were devised and shown to the young people to get their feedback. All of the comments were favorable and the young people were eager that there was an element within the project for them to initially get involved with (planting, clearance etc) and for them to maintain in the future.

Their application to WREN was successful and they were awarded £16,390.00.

The managed clearance and maintenance of the brambles and gorse will mean that wildlife will still be encouraged in to the area. The maze and constructed mounds will enable younger children to run around in a safe environment and the seating will provide access for able and disabled people to enjoy the surrounding scenery and Trotting Track.
