The Plas Power Woods which is owned by the Woodland Trust compliments the adjacent Nant Mill Educational facility run by Wrexam County Borough Council, Nant Mill has a visitor centre and Plas Power Woods is in a way an extension of their facility.
The local branch of the Forest School uses the amenities at Plas Power. They are a small local charity who provides a unique learning experience for children and young people in a woodland setting. Their aim is to build self esteem and self confidence through succeeding in small achievable tasks, appropriately devised for the individuals. They provide opportunities to children and local young people to assess their local natural areas. They participate in practical work of woodland management and rhododendron clearing with their clients who may be children, young people and adult volunteers. The Head of Minera School has shown support.
Plas Power is a unique amenity which offers the combination of being a tranquil place, a place for education, a site of historical importance with public access to a part of Offa's Dyke and other historical structures as well as being a habitat for plants, birdlife, insects and animals.
Acquired by the Trust in 1988 Plas Power also has features of historical interest and importance. These include a 1,200 year old section of Offa's Dyke - a schedule monument. This remarkable earthwork roughly follows the border between Wales and England, although much weathered since its construction Offa's Dyke is nevertheless very impressive at this wood. Other listed structures of historical significance are the Plas Power Park Wall, an ornate cast iron Victorian bridge and railings, the Western Weir built in 1750 and the ruins of two crofts and a miller's house.
WREN funding of £20,206.00 went to restore the Victorian cast iron railings, and to stabilise the wall of an old diary building and remove ivy growing on the listed castellated boundary wall. Restoring, maintaining and managing these features adds to the character and history of this important ancient woodland. They make Plas Power special and unique providing further interest for a variety of visitors to enjoy.
