Barnsley - Mapplewell Park Fitness Equipment

Mapplewell and Staincross Recreation Group have been working with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council for over 4 years to bring improvements to Mapplewell Park. During this time the following major improvements have taken place:

• The draining and levelling of the football pitch

• The installation of a large MUGA and a new children's play area

• The replacement of the old changing rooms with a new, modern unit

Further improvements have been made to the bowling green area and a large number of trees have been planted with funds raised locally by the group.

Although there are play facilities for children, Mapplewell and Staincross Recreation Group have identified the need for something that can benefit people from all age groups. Local consultation has shown that middle aged people and the elderly have expressed a particular interest in using outdoor fitness equipment, which will provide an opportunity to increase health and fitness, generate family activity and strengthen community spirit.

The nine piece package, part funded through £15,000 from WREN, offers work out opportunities across the age range and is suited to all needs. It was also chosen because of its particular suitability for more senior members of the community, including those undertaking rehabilitation. A footway has greatly increased the accessibility of the equipment.

After the recent completion of the project the 'fit kit' is already proving to be very popular with positive comments being received on social networking sites.
