Christleton - The Pit Project
Christleton Pit is the name of the much loved village pond located in the centre of the village of Christleton. It is a large former clay pit which is known to have existed in some form for almost 300 years but its future was threatened following a build up of silt which was having a significant impact on wildlife.
A WREN grant of £31,600 paid for essential dredging works and bank stabilisation works costing over £39,000. In order to minimise disruption to wildlife dredging works were carried out using barges with material removed being spread on local farmland.
A team of volunteers from the friends of Christleton Pit then took over to complete essential bank stabilisation works which will allow visitors to get closer to the water without risk of injury or damage to the pit.
