Colwyn Bay - New Sea Lion Enclosure

The sea lion pool was built into the natural amphitheatre of the bowling green which had been built by the Victorian originators of the Flagstaff Estate. This has enabled the sea lion displays to be watched by hundreds of visitors at any one time. However, the pool itself, whilst adequate, was increasingly perceived as small and did not compare well to showpiece exhibits in other zoos and attractions.

The proposal amounted to a virtual doubling in size of the pool itself. Combining excavation with the creation of a low wall, a pool was created that covers the size of the present enclosure. Reinforced glass windows allow visitors to see the sea lions swimming underwater - both informally and as part of the year round daily displays.
Behind the pool a new land display area was created allowing for a greater range of activities than was previously possible. Additionally new holding pens and housing were built allowing better management of the sea lions and with top quality breeding facilities.

The project included a filtration system enabling the water to be recycled - an improvement both environmentally and with regard to running costs, and the viewing area was improved to provide easy access for disabled visitors.
