Darnall - Galeed House Community Project

The project was to re-landscape the Galeed House yard to provide a creative and user-friendly outside space to enable the DATIC Trust to extend the activities available for the local community.

The small yard area is a significant resource with a great deal of potential and was under-utilised, it was used mostly for access to the two community buildings but also by children to play games and by women who could relax and talk to others. This is still the case but a more aesthetically appealing and welcoming environment.

Following consultation with members of the public, volunteers and management committee who use the community buildings it was decided that the priorities for the yard area are to provide a safe and attractive environment for adults and children to sit and play together.

The new landscaping has provided the following:

  • An even and well-drained ground surface with coloured flags indicating areas for sitting, pathways and play area.
  • Updated disabled access to the second building.
  • An outdoor secure sandpit.
  • An outdoor brick building to provide safe storage for outside toys/furniture.
  • Flower beds to demonstrate planting schemes and encourage community planting of herbs.

The facility is an important aspect to the use of open spaces in this community which is predominantly Muslim and has some restrictive cultural norms in the way in which people use public spaces.

The official opening of the outdoor space, held in July 2010 was well attended by the local community with various nationalities and cultures represented.
