Ely Scout Group Building

Ely scout hut is located on St Johns Road in Ely, and is located on the edge of a recreational field, which has a children's play area, MUGA and skate park (the last two which were previously supported by WREN funding).

A local benefactor bequeathed a large sum of funds to both the Guides (who erected their own purpose-built building quickly) and Scouts, which gave them the catalyst to consider their options. Originally acquired by them, second-hand, in 1964, the building was past its best, and displaying signs of breaking up beneath them.

Along with the asbestos roof, it was also beyond economic repair. A detailed survey was undertaken and replacement was deemed the only option available. As the Scouts wanted a building which not only gave them a new home, but also reacted to the increasing needs of the growing community of Ely, they found it harder to source funds.

WREN stepped in and offered its maximum grant of £50,000 as this project will create a venue which can be hired and used by thousands of people within Ely and the surrounding areas.

The Scouts themselves raised over £30,000 towards the project over a number of years, which was a fantastic effort. Other grants came from the City of Ely Council and East Cambs District Council.

An opening event took place in September 2009, where Scouts, both old and new, could appreciate the results of their tremendous work.
