Hull - East Park Bridge Restoration Project
WREN Awarded £48,600: towards the repair, restoration and conservation of an iconic bridge in East Park, Hull. WREN funding contributed towards the cast items of the bridge.
The bridge is located within the 120 acre Victorian Park, to the north of the boathouse, crossing the Ferens boating lake in a north south direction and was in a poor state of disrepair. This was highlighted during the development of a much larger project to regenerate the East Park using monies from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Hull City Council. The overall project was in excess of £7.2M.
The bridge was built in the 1920's and comprises of 2 arches spanning between a central abutment and abutments at each end. The arches are of reinforced concrete construction and were in need of attention. The handrails and balustrades are formed in pre-cast concrete and were also in need of replacement. The path across the bridge is asphalt and was fully replaced in the restoration works.
With the refurbishment works, the addition of lighting, a network of new paths linked to the bridge and the overall regeneration of the park, the bridge will see and has seen an increased usage by the community.
WREN has also contributed £50,000 towards the Khyber Pass, which is a chasm of exotic rockwork within East Park, Hull.
