Old Colwyn - St Johns Church Garden Improvement
The Church Gardens, which are open to the public, were in much need of improvement. The project was identified in consultation with parishioners, the local community, the Vicar and Parochial Church Council. The overall aims were to restore a 159 meters perimeter metal bow topped fence. The original fence was removed under a government order during the Second World War for salvage and never replaced. The project would involve replacing a privet hedge which had become badly damaged by a metal fence.
The new fence is strong and provides good vision of the area of the garden to give security and confidence to the community in the area as well as allowing the improved gardens to be seen.
The project introduced an educational panel to show historical and other information to visitors including school parties. The board tells visitors about the project and gives information about funding bodies.
The tree canopy was reduced a little to allow sunlight to filter through to the gardens. Many of the shrubs were in need of replacement due to a lack of proper care.
Small themed gardens such as grasses and butterfly attracting plants were introduced along with more seating, litter bins, and nesting boxes for birds and bats. Much of the manual labour for this part of the scheme was carried out by volunteer labour. Funding was sought from Wren for the removal of the interpretation boards, tree surgery, removal of privet hedge and installation of fencing.
