Bedford - Priory Country Park Labyrinth
This project's location is in Priory Country Park, Bedford, an attractive and very well used 100ha site only 2 miles from Bedford town centre. It enjoys the nationally recognised Green Flag Award status but one of the site's shortcomings noted by the award judges was the lack of any formal children's recreation or play provision. As a result, the Park Liaison Group (representatives of all park users are on the group) explored some alternatives with site managers.
The idea of a seven ringed labyrinth received popular support because it reflected historic use of the site and, by using timber, it will have a low environmental impact on the natural setting of the park. The nature of a labyrinth made it ideal for exploration and games for children and adults of all ages. The concept was promoted at public events and there was a positive response and offers of voluntary involvement.
The structure is approximately 30 metres in diameter and constructed using oak timber from sustainable sources. Access to the labyrinth site is excellent and the structure is fully accessible to all including those with disabilities.
