St Nicholas Apse Dalkeith

The consolidation and repair of a 15th century Gothic roofless choir and apse

The first stage of a restoration project for the Gothic Apse at St Nicholas Buccleuch Church in Dalkeith was recently completed. A WREN grant of £20,000 contributed to the cost of conservation work on the Morton Monument.

The 16th century stone carved effigies of the first Earl of Morton and his wife Princess Joanna were removed to a specialist conservation workshop for restoration. The monument was then returned to the Apse where a new glazed canopy was installed to protect it from further erosion.
