Thorpe Hesley Holy Trinity Community Building

VILLAGE HALL & COMMUNITY CENTRE CHALLENGE 2005 FINALIST Holy Trinity Thorpe Hesley provides a community hall that is the lifeblood of the villages community activity and is a very successful community hall. The hall was in very poor repair and was designed inflexibly with only one user at a time able to make use of the building. The architect informed them that the current hall must be demolished and replaced, repair was been ruled out as an option.

The aim of the community building project was to bring about a better quality of life for the local community by bringing new services to the area and enhancing the facilities of those that already exist. This was delivered in the main through the building of a new detached community centre within the church grounds. The church itself will also be upgraded to provide full accessibility and overflow community space.

The Community Forum identified in its Local Action Plan the need for community facilities which would bring about a greater community spirit.

The centre is a valuable resource for both the church and community, providing:

  • a hall that can accommodate up to 150 people
  • facilities to provide IT training for a range of community users
  • a fully equipped kitchen suitable for catering purposes
  • a community information point - facilities for crèche support to activities and meetings
  • fully accessible toilets
  • a high quality meeting/community room.

Users also have access within the church building to 2 overflow community spaces within the main church and a reprographics room.
