Wigg Island Visitors Centre

Wigg Island in Runcorn was historically the site of major chemical works on the banks of the Mersey Estuary. The land was reclaimed, and a first phase opened up to the public as a Community Country Park in 2002. There was a need to build a new Centre in the park to replace the existing temporary container.

This centre provides:

  • A focal point / base for visitors.
  • Interpretation centre for the island, with information about land reclamation, local wildlife, history of the site, and ‘sustainable’ building techniques.
  • A meeting place / classroom space for Friends of Wigg Island, local community groups, visiting school groups etc.
  • A base for the local ranger.
  • Toilet / hot drink facilities.

It is intentioin was to design and construct the building as an ‘iconic’ landmark structure. Use was made of the latest sustainable techniques to provide a ‘green’ building which has as low an impact on the environment as possible in terms of energy conservation, waste minimisation etc.
